Wolverhampton Wanderers boss Vítor Pereira believes Ruben Amorim can cope with the expectation of transforming Manchester United this season.
United head into the upcoming campaign under Ruben Amorim with widespread anticipation of a huge improvement, following the club’s worst season in half a century last term.
United finished in a lowly 15th place, while losing the Europa League final to Tottenham Hotspur marked a miserable end to the season. Amorim, who was hired in November, was never realistically under the threat of losing his job over the summer, but media scrutiny on the former Sporting boss is likely to be intense from the first game week next month.
However, Wolves manager Pereira, who recorded a 1-0 win over Amorim at Old Trafford last season, believes his countryman will not be phased by the scrutiny. United have strengthened their squad by signing Matheus Cunha from Pereira’s Wolves, as well as Bryan Mbeumo, who struck 20 Premier League goals for Brentford last season, but there is an ongoing perception that the Red Devils are being left behind in the transfer market.
Pereira was asked about the Portuguese managers in English football during an interview with O Jogo earlier this week. "[They’ve done] a very stable job, like Nuno,” Pereira said. “Nuno is now moving on to different goals. I've just arrived... Our friend in Manchester too...
“Pressure on Amorim? Yes, but I believe he thrives on the pressure. Because for someone born a champion and with that DNA, pressure is almost like fuel. He's naturally at a club with global stature, but I believe that this year, without European competitions, Amorim will have more time to work and more opportunities to have a different season than last year.
“I don't know if they've changed much yet, because often you have to find the right players for the right positions. And Amorim had a bit of an entrance like me, midway through, at a club with huge media exposure. I believe that if he had won that final….. But that's football.”
United begin their Premier League season with a tough opening-day fixture, hosting last season’s runners-up Arsenal at Old Trafford on Matchday One.
