It was perhaps written for Mohamed Salah to have a big say in his final Merseyside Derby.
The Liverpool forward opened the scoring as Liverpool won 2-1 at Everton on Sunday, in the first-ever Merseyside Derby at Hill Dickinson Stadium.
Salah swept in an opener following Cody Gakpo’s brilliant through pass. Everton equalised through Beto, before Virgil van Dijk’s late winner for Liverpool in stoppage time.
Salah’s goal extended his Premier League record against Everton to nine goals in 15 games, equalling the record for the most-ever Merseyside Derby goals in the Premier League era.
In his final appearance in the fixture, Salah levelled Steven Gerrard’s haul, achieved in twice as many fixtures (30).
“It feels great. The most important thing was to help the team to settle down and feel more confident,” Salah said to Sky Sports at full-time.
“We knew before the game it was going to be tricky, difficult, and I’m glad we were able to win it.”
