The majority of the Stadio Meazza in San Siro will be demolished, but the South-East corner of the stadium will remain standing, including part of the Curva Sud.

Inter and Milan have received the green light to buy the San Siro area, so most of the iconic Stadio Meazza will be demolished as part of plans to build a new stadium in the same zone.

Roberto Spagnolo, coordinator of the construction project of the new Atalanta stadium, explained to Gazzetta how the Stadio Meazza will be taken down.

“Demolition is carried out with mechanical machinery,” Spagnolo said.

“In the first phase, non-concrete elements are removed, such as glass, barriers, railings and doors. Then, with giant hydraulic shears, the structure is taken down. Finally, the concrete is thinned out and separated from the construction steel.”

Gazzetta adds that the demolition will begin from the roof and the third tier and proceed downward. The South-east corner of the Stadio Meazza would remain standing, including part of the ‘orange’ stand and part of the Curva Sud.

The new stadium will be built in the current parking area of the Meazza, so the old stadium will be demolished in 2031 or 2032, after the new one is ready.
