There may have been reason for euphoria after AS Monaco’s win over Olympique de Marseille on Sunday night (2-1), but, speaking post-match, Sébastien Pocognoli guarded against “excessive enthusiasm”.

There is, nonetheless, reason for enthusiasm. Monaco are now on a seven-game winning run in Ligue 1, and their last two wins, against Olympique Lyonnais and OM, have come against direct rivals in the race for UEFA Champions League qualification.

From a midtable standing back in January, Pocogonoli’s side are now level with Marseille in fourth and just one point away from third-placed Lille OSC. “What I like is that my players are winning matches, but there isn’t any excessive enthusiasm. There are smiles but also an awareness of a not-so-distant past that we don’t want to revisit,” said the Belgian in a post-match press conference attended by Get French Football News.

On the race for UCL qualification, he added, “We are all separated by three or four points. You can ask the same question to Rennes, to Lyon, to Lille, to Marseille… we can all fight. There are still multiple games remaining to have different scenarios. We are coming from far back, and we will try to continue this good run.”
