Sergio Romero, the 39-year-old Argentina goalkeeper once earmarked to replace Jan Oblak at Benfica, has announced his retirement. According to Glorioso 1904, the former Manchester United player has called time on his career.

Capped 96 times, he is Argentina’s most-capped goalkeeper. He won the Under-20 World Cup and the Olympics, and started at the 2014 World Cup where Argentina lost to Germany in the final.

Romero began at Racing Club before moving to Europe with AZ Alkmaar. He later represented Sampdoria, Monaco, Manchester United, Venezia and Boca Juniors, featuring across five different leagues.

At United he was part of the squad that won the 2016/17 UEFA Europa League under José Mourinho.

He finished his career in his homeland with Argentinos Juniors.
