Sergio Romero: Former Man United cult hero makes winning debut | OneFootball

Manchester United have had their fair share of problems with goalkeepers in recent years.

Nonetheless, the club seemed in good hands in the second half of the 2010s when David de Gea was number one and he was backed up by Sergio Romero.

History at the club

The Argentine was signed by Louis van Gaal in 2015 and went on to become probably one of the club’s better signings at this time.

Romero played a total of 61 matches for the Red Devils, an impressive achievement for a back-up keeper.

He kept an outstanding 39 clean sheets and amazingly only conceded 26 goals in his entire United career.

His crowning achievement for the club came when he started the Europa League final in 2017 as Jose Mourinho’s side beat Ajax 2-0 on the night.

The keeper who represented Argentina 96 times left Old Trafford in 2021 to go to Venezia in Italy. In 2022 he left for his homeland to represent Boca Juniors.

New chapter

Romero quit Boca last week though as he was no longer considered a starter and had his contract mutually terminated.

He signed for first division side Argentinos and jumped right into starting action for his new club.

Speaking to Argentine paper Ole he claimed, “when many people said Romero was finished, I showed them that I wasn’t finished, and now I’ll do the same at Argentinos.”

Romero helped his side run out 3-1 winners and he made two important saves in the match to secure the three points for his new team.

His biggest intervention coming in the 41st minute when he tipped over a well-struck effort from the centre of the goal.
