Sheffield United were pegged back by West Bromwich Albion at Bramall Lane on Saturday afternoon in what was a flat performance by the hosts.
The Blades eventually took the lead early in the second half when a Gustavo Hamer low cross was turned into his own net by Baggies defender George Campbell. Campbell would later put the ball in the net at the right end when he thundered in an effort from around 30 yards out.
Blades: A. Davies, Tanganga, Bindon, Hamer, O’Hare (Cannon 87), Brooks, Hoever (Seriki 84), Burrows, Peck, Riedewald (Rothwell 71), Bamford (Campbell 45).
Unused: Faxon, Arblaster, Hjelde, Chong, McGuinness.
West Brom: O’Leary, Styles, Bielik (Taylor 45) Campbell, Molumby (Mowatt 90), Dike (Jimoh-Aloba 78), Diakite, Heggebo (Maja 90), Price, Imray, Bostock (Wallace 69).
Unused: Griffiths, Gilchrist, Mustapha, Whitwell.
The contest began in stop-start fashion, with both Japhet Tanganga and Krystian Bielik requiring treatment early on, disrupting the flow of the opening exchanges. When play eventually settled, the Blades created the first real opportunity of what would prove to be a frustrating opening 45 minutes. Andre Brooks found space on the angle but flashed a right-footed effort wide of the far post.
At the other end, a mistake from Ki-Jana Hoever gifted Albion a chance from a corner, but Bielik fired over the bar, with Daryl Dike inadvertently getting in the way of his own teammate during the scramble.
The Blades made a change before the interval as Tyrese Campbell replaced Patrick Bamford. Albion started the second half sharply, with Price forcing a smart save from Adam Davies after being played through by Dike. In the build-up, Jairo Riedewald had been shown a yellow card for a foul on the powerful American striker.
Despite Albion’s bright restart, it was the hosts who broke the deadlock in unfortunate fashion in the 53rd minute. Campbell made a sliding attempt to stop a dangerous cross from Gustavo Hamer but succeeded only in diverting the ball past his own goalkeeper and into the bottom corner.
Albion pushed for a response and Davies was called into action again, saving well from Price’s speculative effort from the edge of the box.
Back down the other end, Sheffield United had several golden opportunities to put the game beyond doubt. Callum O’Hare, Sydie Peck, Campbell and Hamer all squandered chances from close range as the Blades repeatedly failed to capitalise on their advantage.
Those missed opportunities proved costly. With seven minutes remaining, Albion drew level. Campbell made amends for his earlier own goal in emphatic fashion, rifling a powerful strike from distance beyond Davies and into the net to restore parity.
