The beleaguered Championship club were given a lifeline with two free agent signings in October, but one of them is now out for the rest of December.

With their playing staff cut to the bone by transfer restrictions, Sheffield Wednesday were offered a lifeline in the form of two free agent signings, but injury has now rendered one of them a bit of a waste the club can ill-afford at the moment.

Sheffield Wednesday manager Henrik Pedersen must wonder at times what he has to do to catch a break. His team were desperately close to securing a second win of the season on Tuesday night at Watford, only for Vivaldo Semedo to pop up with a 97th-minute equaliser and keep the Owls 28 points from safety at the foot of the Championship.

But while a substantial proportion of the club's problems have been caused by the mismanagement of soon-to-be former owner Dejphon Chansiri, there have also been times when plain bad luck have also hindered their chances, and nowhere is this more clearly visible than in the case of Nathan Redmond, one of the emergency signings that the club were permitted to make, but who's already joined the Owls' injury list.

Nathan Redmond injury will keep him out for the remainder of December

Sheffield Wednesday manager Pedersen confirmed after his team's draw at Watford that winger Redmond will be missing for the rest of December with a groin problem.

Redmond had made his Wednesday debut with eleven minutes to play of their 3-2 defeat to Preston North End at Hillsborough, and was on the bench for their abandoned match at Blackburn Rovers last weekend.

Pedersen has now confirmed, though, that the player complained of a groin issue on the day after the Blackburn match. The manager had said prior to the Watford match that he expected him to be back soon, but this has now been revised and that Redmond will now be missing for the remainder of this month.

Nathan Redmond injury marks the end of a forgettable year for the both player and his new club

The loss of Nathan Redmond is a particularly cruel blow for Pedersen, given that the player's arrival at the club was one of two emergency free agent signings allowed by the EFL just a few weeks earlier. Redmond was the second of these signings, following the former Leeds United defender Liam Cooper, joining the club just two weeks ago.

Sheffield Wednesday have had serious personnel issues as a result of transfer restrictions that were put in place during the summer as a result of the club's failure to pay player and staff wages earlier this year. On transfer deadline day, they were only allowed to bring in defender Harry Amass from Manchester United because United agreed to pay his entire wage.

Even this wasn't their first injury crisis of the season. Two weeks before the transfer window closed, the club had to seek special dispensation to bring in an emergency goalkeeper when Pierce Charles injured his shoulder, with Ethan Horvath arriving on loan from Cardiff City.

After the club was put into administration on the 24th October, and with injuries to a threadbare squad mounting again, the club sought permission to bring in new players, resulting in the arrival of Cooper and Redmond.

This injury setback is also a disaster for Redmond himself. Redmond, who's made one appearance for the England national team, only made two appearances for Burnley last season and had been without a club since they released him in the summer.

For Redmond, this was an opportunity to prove himself again following a difficult couple of years.
