Sheffield Wednesday’s financial turmoil deepened on Monday after it emerged that players will once again not receive their wages on time, with September’s pay day set to be missed.
According to BBC Sport, the playing squad was informed by the club’s hierarchy that their salaries would be delayed, though no final decision has yet been communicated regarding the wages of non-playing staff. If confirmed, this would mark the fifth occasion in seven months that the Championship side has failed to pay on schedule, further compounding the uncertainty engulfing Hillsborough.
The development risks fresh sanctions from the English Football League (EFL), which has already imposed five transfer embargoes on Wednesday this year. The most recent, announced last week, relates to outstanding debts owed for unpaid transfers and other “football creditors.” Previous failings have already resulted in restrictions that prevent the club from making signings for the next three transfer windows.
Chairman Dejphon Chansiri has previously signalled a willingness to sell the club but has so far been unable to secure an agreement with potential buyers. An American consortium, linked over the summer, withdrew from talks, leaving behind a fire-sale of playing talent and the departure of head coach Danny Rohl by mutual consent.
On the pitch, Wednesday’s struggles mirror their boardroom instability. The Owls have taken just one win from their opening seven Championship fixtures and sit perilously close to the bottom of the table, a single place above rivals Sheffield United.
Supporters’ groups have staged regular protests in recent weeks, demanding clarity and stability. With wages once again delayed and financial sanctions mounting, frustration among fans and staff is only likely to grow.
