Sam Morsy's contract at Kuwait SC has been terminated after just three games in a shock turn of events.
Sam Morsy left Ipswich Town this summer to take on a new challenge in the Middle East, but after just three games for his new side, Kuwait SC, the 34-year-old has seen his contract terminated in an unexpected twist.
After nearly four years at Ipswich, earning back-to-back promotions and captaining the club in the Premier League, Egyptian midfielder Morsy left Portman Road this summer on a free transfer to seek a new challenge in the Middle East.
Morsy joined the Tractor Boys in August 2021 with the club still in League One after falling out of favour at Middlesbrough, which, unknowingly to him, would prove to be the best decision of his career to date.
He appeared 34 times in League One in his debut campaign and was instantly named captain of the club. However, it was the next three seasons that proved to be instrumental in Morsy's career.
The nine-time capped Egyptian international played 44 times the following campaign as Ipswich were promoted to the Championship, and then 42 times in the one that followed as Ipswich became the first team since Southampton in 2012 to earn back-to-back promotions into the Premier League.
Morsy played 33 times in the top flight, the first time he had played in the Premier League in his entire career, as Ipswich were ultimately relegated.
The Egyptian's meteoric rise did not go unnoticed, as he attracted attention from the Middle East in what he would have viewed as a dream move - or so he thought.
As reported by Qatar-based AlKass Sports, after just three games with new side Kuwait SC, Morsy's contract has been terminated with immediate effect, in a shock turn of events that nobody could have possibly foreseen.
Indeed, the former Port Vale, Chesterfield, and Wigan Athletic midfielder hadn't enjoyed the best of starts to his new life in Kuwait, having been sent off after 30 minutes in his most recent outing against Al-Arabi, which would ultimately prove to be his last.
Strangely enough, Morsy hadn't received a red card during his entire time at Ipswich, despite him garnering a reputation as a tough-tackling midfielder.
But what he didn't manage in 165 games with the Tractor Boys, he has after just three with Kuwait SC, which has led to the agreed termination of his contract by both parties.
Morsy was just months into a lucrative two-year deal in the Kuwaiti capital, and will now leave the club, likely with a hefty payout, as the side now looks to sign another foreign midfielder to replace the Egyptian.
Ipswich fans have been quick to take to social media and voice their opinion over Morsy's contract termination, with many wanting to see a swift return to the club for their former captain.
It speaks volumes that fans of your former club would want you back in any capacity, and that is no different here, with this fan in particular happy to see him return as not just a player, but as a coach as well.
Despite having played for six clubs across the EFL, many Tractor Boys fans consider Ipswich to be Morsy's home, such was his success there.
At a minimum, fans would like to see him at least train with the club as he maintains his fitness, such as their affinity for a player who oversaw two promotions in three-and-a-half years as captain.
After a premature end to his stay in the Middle East, Morsy will once again be available to pick up on a free transfer, but he won't be able to join another club in January.
With 105 games in League Two, 200 games in League One and 188 in the Championship, Morsy is a true veteran of the EFL, and having played Premier League football just months ago, he will certainly not be short of offers.
Whether he will return to England remains to be seen, and old club Ipswich have the likes of Jens Cajuste, Azor Matusiwa, Jack Taylor, Cameron Humphreys and Marcelino Nunez all vying for a place in McKenna's midfield, making a return for Morsy difficult
At 34 years old, the Egyptian almost certainly still has a lot to give and could yet make a significant impact in the EFL.
