For Sounders fans, there are some familiar themes to the beginning of this season. From injuries to early losses to surpassing MLS expectations, the Rave Green support has plenty of experience with the struggles of the early season.
Sounders faithful are once again waiting for the return of Jordan Morris and Pedro de la Vega. Both are out with injuries and are expected back sometime in April. There is once again plenty of talent to hold the fort, but their margin of error is lessened by their presence. In previous seasons, injuries have led to losing points in the first half of the season, only to have the Sounders come charging up the standings and be a team that nobody wants to face in any cup final.
The goal for the Sounders is to win as many trophies as possible. That is the same. In the past, winning a cup in the season has not been followed up with multiple titles for the season. Is this the year they bring home all three cups? That is one of the things that makes the MLS early season so hopeful for fans of every team, but the Sounders are always in the hunt for accumulating more hardware.
There has been a trend this season, and in general that road wins are difficult to come by. This is a bit daunting for the Sounders since Lumen is unavailable for the next month as grass is being cultivated for the upcoming World Cup games being played there. So far the Sounders are 1-1 with the next 5 games taking place out of Seattle. Technically the game against Vancouver on the 18th is a home game, but it is being held at ONE Spokane Stadium. If the Sounders can finish this stretch with a winning record, they would have to consider that as a success.
Paul Rothrock sat out of the St. Louis game and is considered day-to-day. The other fan favorites, Nouhou, and the Roldan brothers, played exceptionally well as all three of them have an eye on playing for their respective countries in the World Cup and other national team games. Morris's injuries may hinder his chances of making the team. In a different dimension where he hasn't had a flurry of injuries, he wouldn't be the Sounder's leading scorer (he would be playing in Europe), but he would be a constant fixture on the World Cup team.
So, as this young season matures, I will leave you with this thought. There are things that bind all Sounders and their fans together. After Kalani Kossa-Rienzi scored the only goal of the game, he went on to do a back flip. While he attributed the celebration to his experiences with gymnastics, Sounders Nation saw the similarities to another Sounder's player, Obafemi Martins, the prolific striker from yesteryear that helped bridge the gap for the faithful.
