Southampton are reportedly in advanced talks to sign free agent Dan Neil.
According to Sky Sports, Neil is high on Southampton manager Tonda Eckert’s wish list this summer and is close to finalising his switch to St Mary’s.
So, how has he been this season, what’s his style of play, and what could he add to the Saints’ midfield?
It’s been an underwhelming campaign for the 24-year-old, with a move away from boyhood club Sunderland now looking set to happen. He had been at the Black Cats for 18 years, joining the club’s academy at 8 years old.
After just 3 Premier League appearances, he made a January loan move to Championship side Ipswich. He featured 16 times in England’s second tier this year, mostly coming off the bench as he totalled just over 600 minutes.
He couldn’t find consistent gametime at Portman Road, and after Ipswich secured promotion, it became increasingly clear that a permanent deal was unlikely.
While it has added another promotion to his CV, his failure to solidify himself in the setup could mean there are lingering questions over whether he is ready to be a guaranteed starter for a side with promotion ambitions. Southampton would be signing a player with a strong Championship pedigree but one who is coming off the back of a difficult season.
However, Tonda Eckert’s side are expected to rotate in the midfield, meaning Neil would not necessarily arrive under pressure to start every week, currently with the options of Caspar Jander, Flynn Downes and Cameron Bragg.
There is also reason to believe Neil could rediscover his best form under Tonda Eckert. Since arriving at St Mary’s, Eckert has shown a willingness to place trust in players whose playing time had previously suffered.
Both Daniel Peretz and Cyle Larin enjoyed a resurgence in form last season, and Southampton will hope Neil could follow a similar path should a move be completed this summer.
Dan Neil is primarily a defensive midfielder. His addition would likely address the inevitable departure of Shea Charles this summer. The Northern Ireland international has been subject to interest from Leeds, with talks reportedly progressing for a permanent move from Southampton.
His versatility across both the 6 and 8 roles could make him an invaluable option over the course of a long Championship season.
In Sunderland’s promotion campaign (24/25), Neil was one of the most complete midfielders in the division, sitting in the 81st percentile for duels won amongst Championship midfielders. Alongside his defensive capabilities, he was a progressive, with both his progressive carries and forward passes above the 75th percentile.

Dan Neil’s Championship Stats (24/25)
While undergoing a difficult campaign over the course of the last campaign, Neil has captained Sunderland, alongside more than 200 senior appearances for the club, establishing himself as one of the division’s most reliable midfielders before their top-flight return last year.
Another factor that makes the move appealing is how closely Neil’s profile mirrors that of Shea Charles. During Charles’ loan spell at Sheffield Wednesday, he impressed with his ball-winning ability and willingness to progress play through midfield. Neil posted similar underlying numbers during the 24/25 season.

Shea Charles & Dan Neil’s Similar Metrics (24/25)
While the pair are not identical players, Southampton would be bringing in a midfielder capable of replicating many of the qualities Charles has offered, potentially easing the transition should Charles depart.
Adding Championship experience to the side is pivotal. The fact that Neil is only 24 years old makes the deal even better for the South Coast outfit. On a free transfer, there is little risk with a potentially high upside.
Despite ‘Spygate’ costing Southampton the chance of promotion last season, the hierarchy at St Mary’s has already shown significant intent this summer. With the likes of Daniel Peretz, Cyle Larin and James Bree committing their futures at Southampton, the club has shown belief in Tonda Eckert to launch another promotion push.
If the Saints can secure Neil’s signing, it could prove a critical one in the long term whilst helping facilitate further transfers elsewhere this summer.
