Sporting Lisbon achieved a remarkable feat, becoming only the fifth team to overturn a three-goal first-leg deficit in the Champions League knockout rounds, securing a 5-3 aggregate win over Bodo/Glimt.

The Portuguese club had been swept aside 3-0 in the Arctic Circle last week. However, a stunning 5-0 win after extra time at Estadio Jose Alvalade on Tuesday propelled Sporting into the quarter-finals for the first time since 1982-83.

Defender Goncalo Inacio initiated the fightback, heading in from a corner in the 34th minute. Luis Suarez then teed up Pedro Goncalves to score in the 61st minute, with Suarez then levelling the tie from the penalty spot in the 78th minute.

Sporting sealed progression in extra time, with Maximiliano Araujo scoring just two minutes in, before Rafael Nel added a decisive fifth goal in added time.

Bodo/Glimt had been the standout story of the Champions League this season, securing memorable wins over Manchester City, Atletico Madrid and Inter Milan.

Hailing from a modest fishing town of just 55,000 residents in northern Norway, this unassuming club defies expectations, proving they belong among Europe's elite. Not only are they competing, but they are also triumphing, boasting a remarkable four-win streak that has propelled them into the knockout stage of Europe's top club competition.

Their scalps include a stunning 3-1 home victory over Manchester City, a 2-1 away win against Atletico Madrid, followed by crucial home and away successes against last season's runner-up, Inter Milan, during the Norwegian league's off-season.

Sporting’s win is only the fifth time in Champions League history that a club has overturned a three-goal deficit from the first-leg.

Barcelona famously beat PSG 6-1 in 2017 after losing 4-0, while Deportivo La Coruna stunned AC Milan 4-0 in 2004 to progress 5-4.

Roma overturned a 4-1 loss to Barcelona in 2018, advancing on away goals after a 3-0 win, before Liverpool’s iconic 4-0 victory over Barcelona in 2019 sealed a 4-3 aggregate triumph.
