Even missing several first-teamers, Portuguese champions Sporting were far too strong for an abject AFS team in Lisbon this evening, running out 6-0 winners without having to play anywhere near their best.
It was one-way traffic throughout the 90 minutes and the only surprise was how long it took the Lions to make the breakthrough.
The visitors held out for 32 minutes, before Luis Suárez rocketed the opener into the net, and AFS duly collapsed like a pack of cards. Two more goals from Maxi Araújo and Geny Catamo quickly followed.
In the second half the same three scorers all helped themselves to another goal apiece for a round half dozen, and were it not for a handful of fine saves by overworked AFS goalkeeper João Gonçalves, the margin of victory would have been even greater.
Not the greatest advert for Portuguese football, although it has to be said AFS – currently on just three points after 14 matches – are most certainly the worst team to play in the top flight for years.
But Sporting won’t be worried about that. Rui Borges’ men bounce back from their midweek loss at Bayern Munich while resting several players and remain in touch with FC Porto despite the ferocious pace set by the Dragons at the top of the table.
Sporting move to within two points of the leaders ahead of Porto’s match at home against Estrela da Amadora on Monday.
