Tottenham Hotspur moved up to second place in the Premier League after defeating 10-men West Ham United at the London Stadium.

Thomas Frank's side were the better throughout much of the game but were aggrieved early on for an unusually disallowed goal.

Cristián Romero thought he had headed his into the lead from a corner but VAR intervened and penalised the Argentinian for a shove in the area. It was the kind of decisions that annoy fans primarily for inconsistency, Romero did nothing that isn't seen in almost every corner and the decision for this to be escalated when others are not will would have come under severe scrutiny had the result not still gone Spurs' way.

Indeed, Spurs took the lead early in the second half. Again, this was a corner delivery with Pape Matar Sarr heading in at the far post.

Things got worse for Graham Potter's side. Seven minutes later, Tomás Soucek challenged for a loose ball and with a foot raised caught João Palhinha. Referee Jarred Gillett had no hesitation in sending the midfielder off for a foul that was more clumsy than malicious but nonetheless worthy of a red card.

The game was effectively wrapped up five minutes later. Romero sent in a long ball over the top that Lucas Bergvall latched on to with the young Swede finding the net for his first Premier League goal.

Spurs added a third in the 64th minute, this time West Ham were able to deal with the initial corner with the away side recycling the ball. Bergvall looked to find space in the box but the ball instead fell kindly into the path of Micky van de Ven to finish past Mads Hermansen.

From that point, everyone could have packed up and gone home as the visitors enjoyed what was essentially a training match as West Ham had no way of getting back into the game.

Spurs then are only behind rivals Arsenal on goal difference. Meanwhile, the Hammers lose their third league game of the season with Crystal Palace coming to town next week.
