A new report has detailed the stadium capacities of all Premier League clubs, Newcastle United and St James’ Park obviously included.

This new report from The Telegraph covers plans from Arsenal to raise their Emirates Stadium from a current capacity of 60,704, to a new capacity of over 70,000.

Two main reasons of course for the Gunners wanting to do that.

It will help Arsenal generate far more cash each season, as well as allow a lot more fans in to watch their team.

When Newcastle United expanded St James’ Park to over 52,000 for the start of the 2000/2001 season, only Man U’s Old Trafford had a bigger capacity when it came to other Premier League clubs.

That lasted six years until the 2006/07 season saw Arsenal moving from Highbury into a 60,000+ Emirates Stadium.

Whilst Mike Ashley showed zero ambition (other than improving his own personal bank balance and the revenues of his other business interests) on or off the pitch for the decade and a half he owned Newcastle United, all of United’s rivals were doing everything they could to become more powerful on and off the pitch.

The four years the new Newcastle United owners have been in control, they have been trying to play catch up.

A new stadium with a far bigger capacity than the current St James’ Park one is desperately needed. Both in terms of far more fans able to watch their team and in order to bring in the far greater revenues to allow Newcastle to compete. Supporters still waiting for an announcement, that has been delayed a number of times, as to what the new stadium plans will be AND most importantly of all, what the capacity will be.

Now 25 years after that increase to over 52,000, Newcastle United and St James’ Park have seen a fall to now be only eighth highest when it comes to capacities of stadiums at Premier League clubs.

Indeed, St James’ Park has fallen in capacity in recent years.

With more and more areas getting converted from seating for ‘normal’ fans into those offering hospitality at far higher prices with additional benefits, including space and added facilities, the official Premier League annual handbook (each club providing their information) shows the St James’ Park official capacity has gone down from 52,305 for the 2022/23 season to 52,264 in 2025/26.
