Stefan Ortega attracting late transfer interest as Manchester City exit remains possible

Manchester City could yet part ways with third-choice goalkeeper Stefan Ortega in the final days of the summer transfer window elsewhere in European football.

The German shot-stopper has been a reliable deputy since his arrival from Arminia Bielefeld in 2022, offering strong performances whenever called upon in cup competitions and stepping up during Ederson’s absences.

However, the dynamics at the Etihad Stadium have shifted dramatically this summer following the arrival of Gianluigi Donnarumma, with the Italian set to compete directly for the starting role. As a result, Ortega now finds himself pushed further down the pecking order.

Ortega’s situation has been a point of discussion throughout the window, with reports earlier in the summer suggesting he was considering his long-term future. While City have always been keen to retain his services, the player’s personal ambitions may drive him to explore regular first-team football elsewhere.

While the Premier League and most major European windows have already shut, the Turkish transfer market remains open, giving clubs the chance to make late adjustments to their squads.

According to the information of Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg, Trabzonspor are now exploring a deal to sign Manchester City’s now-third choice goalkeeper Stefan Ortega in the final days of the Turkish summer transfer window.

From the side of the Germany international, it is detailed that Ortega himself is evaluating the newly-emerging option, although no offer has been made to either the goalkeeper or Manchester City at present.

If Stefan Ortega were to depart, City would be left with Donnarumma and James Trafford as senior goalkeepers alongside Marcus Bettinelli, who joined originally as a third-choice from Chelsea earlier this summer.

For Stefan Ortega himself, the chance to join Trabzonspor could provide the regular game time he has lacked in Manchester, as well as an opportunity to compete in European football with a club that consistently fights at the top end of the Turkish Süper Lig.

Should the move materialise, it could be the start of a new chapter in his career while marking the end of a quietly effective spell at the Etihad Stadium.
