Stephan Lichtsteiner has been appointed Basel head coach on a contract to 2029, replacing Ludovic Magnin. The former right-back previously played for Lille and Juventus.
It is the 42-year-old's first senior head coach role. The club said in a statement that Magnin was removed due to stagnating performances and inconsistency on the pitch.
Lichtsteiner had been working within Basel's academy. Since retiring in 2020, he has served as assistant with SC Kriens U16 and Switzerland U18.
He is convinced by Basel's long-term project and is pleased to contribute. Though the move came earlier than planned, he saw the chance and wanted to take on the challenge.
Basel sit fourth in the Swiss league, 10 points behind leaders FC Thun and one point off the podium. They lost 3-1 in Salzburg then won 4-3 in Zurich.
