Sunderland’s transfer push is gathering pace, with Thomas Meunier close after completing a medical and agreeing terms on a two-year deal. Fabrizio Romano reports the Belgium international has passed tests, and Sky Sports’ Keith Downie says an announcement is expected on Wednesday.
The 34-year-old would arrive on a free following his Lille exit, adding European know-how and competition for Trai Hume at right-back. His arrival could also allow Nordi Mukiele to feature more often in central defence.
Sunderland are monitoring Genoa defender Brooke Norton-Cuffy, though Everton are currently leading the chase and have held fresh talks, according to TEAMtalk. The 22-year-old is valued at about £17million, with Fulham previously credited with interest.
Italian journalist Nicolò Schira claims Sunderland are among clubs following £42million-rated Monaco striker Folarin Balogun, with Juventus, Borussia Dortmund and two other Premier League sides also attentive. There is no suggestion Sunderland have bid or entered advanced talks.
FourFourTwo reports Sunderland are close to adding a French attacking midfielder, identifying Noé Lebreton of NEC Nijmegen. He posted seven goals and six assists in 27 Eredivisie games as NEC finished third, reaching the Champions League third qualifying round. No fee or medical has been confirmed.
Leeds United are expected to sign Tarik Muharemović from Sassuolo for £34million, with Juventus due roughly £17million from a 50 per cent sell-on. Alfredo Pedullà reports Juve could then step up a move for Bologna centre-back Jhon Lucumí, whose clause of about £24million is expiring.
