Dan Cameron is closing in on a move to Boston United in the National League after Sunderland recalled him from Hebburn Town. Sunderland Echo understands that the 20-year-old was brought back with a higher-level opportunity in mind.
His return from South Tyneside was confirmed earlier this week. He had been expected to stay with Northern Premier League promotion hopefuls Hebburn for the rest of the season, but interest from Boston offers a rise in standard and exposure at National League level, a jump of two divisions.
Cameron impressed for the Hornets, who sit second in the Northern Premier League and are chasing promotion to the National League North. Hebburn had planned to keep him for the run-in, yet Sunderland activated the recall to facilitate the potential move.
Relations between the clubs remain positive. Hebburn, managed by Daniel Moore, are closing in on Sunderland goalkeeper Issac Allen as a replacement. The 18-year-old, previously with Lincoln City and on loan at Whitby Town this season, is expected to join for their promotion push.
Striker Jake Waters is also nearing a loan switch to Hebburn. The 20-year-old spent a month on loan at Spennymoor Town in the National League North earlier this season and could now gain Northern Premier League experience as Moore strengthens his attack.
With Hebburn near the summit, there is plenty at stake in the coming weeks. The moves underline Sunderland’s academy links with the non-league scene on Wearside and beyond. For Waters, following two ACL injuries, regular senior football would be an important next step.
