Sunderland are among several European clubs linked with Paraguay midfielder Matias Galarza after his side’s contentious World Cup round-of-16 defeat to France. SportDog reports that the Black Cats have an interest in the 24-year-old.
France advanced as Kylian Mbappe converted a penalty that proved decisive, ending Gustavo Alfaro’s team’s run. Current Black Cats star Omar Alderete and former Newcastle United winger Miguel Almiron started for Paraguay.
Galarza drew criticism for a first-half clash with Mbappe that BBC pundit Joe Hart felt could have been a red card.
France head coach Didier Deschamps declined to criticise the referee or Paraguay, noting his side finished with three bookings while a lot had gone on. He said he could do without insults, stressed there were no incidents at the end and that qualification was what mattered.
Galarza plays for CA Talleres in Argentina and previously spent two years at Genk, featuring in qualifying rounds of the Champions League, Europa League and Europa Conference League. The report lists Olympiakos and Getafe as frontrunners for his signature, with Monza and Strasbourg also in the race. He has more than two years left on his Talleres contract.
