Sunderland are targeting FC Metz right-back Koffi Kouao amid rival interest.
According to Media Foot, the Black Cats’ interest dates back to early December, and they could face competition from Rangers, while a Bundesliga club has already held talks.
The 27-year-old joined Metz in 2022 from Vizela and has played 113 times, scoring three and assisting eight. This season he has two Ligue 1 goals and one assist, averaging 1.18 successful dribbles and 7.34 defensive contributions per 90 minutes despite Metz sitting bottom and close to relegation.
Kouao’s contract expires this summer and he has said he will not renew. “It’s been four seasons of ups and downs, joys and sadness. But I’ve always tried to give everything on the pitch for this club, and to live up to expectations off it. Three more matches to finish the season strong. But it has been an honour,” he told L’Equipe.
Sunderland have options at right-back, with Trai Hume, Lutsharel Geertruida and Nordi Mukiele used there this season. Mukiele has often covered centre-back, and Geertruida’s loan ends this summer with no word on a permanent move. Head coach Regis Le Bris may look for cover and competition for Hume, and Kouao could fit.
