Sunderland are braced for a crucial summer window ahead of their Europa League adventure, with last year’s recruitment underpinning a memorable campaign.
After the Championship play-off final win against Sheffield United, departures such as Jobe Bellingham and Tommy Watson were followed by swift action. The Wembley victory triggered a permanent deal for loan signing Enzo Le Fee, a club transfer record that was surpassed within weeks by Strasbourg midfielder Habib Diarra.
A hectic summer then brought Granit Xhaka, Paraguay international Omar Alderete and Dutch trio Robin Roefs, Lutsharel Geertruida and Brian Brobbey before the window closed. January additions followed, goalkeeper Melker Ellborg, Anderlecht winger Nilson Angulo and Ivorian youngster Jocelin Ta Bi.
The result was seventh place and a Europa League berth. This summer is not expected to be as hectic, yet European preparation means the squad will need reinforcing when the window opens on Monday.
Premier League net transfer spend for 2025/26 was led by Arsenal at £243m loss, then Liverpool £227m loss, Manchester City £168m loss, Tottenham Hotspur £158m loss and Manchester United £149m loss, with Sunderland £135m loss.
They were followed by Everton £101m loss, Nottingham Forest £97m loss, Leeds United £92m, Newcastle United £89m loss, Burnley £84m loss, Fulham £49m loss, West Ham United £46m loss, Crystal Palace £41m loss, Aston Villa £11m loss and Chelsea £4m loss.
Four clubs posted profits, Brentford £44m, Brighton and Hove Albion £55m, Wolverhampton Wanderers £70m and Bournemouth £112m.
