According to Opta, Sunderland are projected to finish 12th on 51.15 points after a dramatic Tyne-Wear derby victory. The result leaves them 11th heading into the final international break, three points off the European places.
Regis Le Bris’ side fell behind inside the opening 10 minutes at St James Park, Anthony Gordon punishing a Luke O’Nien header. Just before the hour, Chemsdine Talbi levelled from close range. In the final minute, Brian Brobbey beat Aaron Ramsdale at the second attempt to clinch it.
The win completed a league double over Newcastle and extended Sunderland’s unbeaten run in league derby fixtures to an 11th game. Celebrations in the away end underlined the scale of the moment.
Le Bris hailed a big achievement and a tough contest, noting Newcastle’s first-half momentum and the impact of an early mistake. He praised his players’ reaction, the half-time reset and the second-half display, adding the victory means a lot while insisting the team want to keep improving.
Opta’s model forecasts a title for Arsenal on 84.77 points, with Manchester City on 74.45, Manchester United on 66.06 and Aston Villa on 65.04. Newcastle are predicted 10th on 52.03, Fulham 11th on 51.92, with Bournemouth 13th on 50.88.
