The goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen was one of the players who reported to FC Barcelona on 13 July, when other players who did not participate in the World Cup 2026 also returned to start preseason training. However, his case was different as he is close to completing a loan move to Ajax.
It has been two weeks since an agreement for this purpose was reached between the two clubs. The main stumbling block was his high wages, but they have already worked out a formula that satisfied both the parties.
As things stand, only the resolution of the tax issues between the German goalkeeper and the Catalan club remains before this move can be finalized. Ter Stegen and Barcelona have been working on this issue in recent days, and it is also possible that an agreement might have been reached, but neither the player nor the club has announced it yet.
Meanwhile, MARCA reports that the veteran goalkeeper was not among the players who trained with Hansi Flick on Thursday. Going forward, he is not expected to train with his teammates either, but he did train with the rest of the available players on Tuesday and Wednesday.
For now, he is expected to travel to Amsterdam to finalize his transfer. In the Dutch capital, he will undergo medical tests, and Ajax are expected to thoroughly check him over keeping in view the injuries he has suffered in the last few years. However, the Dutch side has already received assurances that he is in very good physical condition, and it would be quite a surprise if he failed his medical.
Hopefully, these remaining stages of the transfer would be completed as soon as possible, so all the involved parties, Ter Stegen, Barcelona, and Ajax, can prepare for the upcoming season with one less thing to worry about.
