The Spaniard made just three appearances in the league, although he fared better in the Conference League, where he scored six goals.

Given the influx of new signings in attack Guiu fell down the pecking order and the decision was taken to send him on loan to Premier League new boys Sunderland.

Guiu scored his first goal for the Black Cats in the Carabao Cup, but only played 13 minutes in the first three league games.

Guiu missed most of the second half of last season through injury.

However, the course of Guiu’s season changed after Liam Delap suffered a hamstring injury against Fulham, which could rule him out for eight weeks.

Chelsea tried to cancel Nicolas Jackson’s move to Bayern Munich, and also made enquiries to sign Conrad Harder.

The Blues recalled Guiu from Sunderland despite him only just arriving there, and it will be interesting to see if Maresca trusts him and utilises him more than last season.

The Athletic have reported Maresca likes the intensity, hunger and passion Guiu brings to both training and games.

The report adds this shouldn’t be overlooked because the Italian dropped several players last season for not doing that.

Conrad Harder didn’t want to join Chelsea

In light of Delap’s injury Chelsea did think about signing Strasbourg striker Emanuel Emegha and also made enquiries for Harder.

The 20-year-old scored five goals in the Portuguese league last season as he played back-up to Viktor Gyokeres, but he didn’t want to join Chelsea because he believed there would be a lack of first team opportunities.

Harder ultimately ended up joining RB Leipzig and Chelsea will need to hope Joao Pedro stays fit, so there isn’t a huge reliance on Guiu to deliver.
