Liverpool finally have a chance to replace Cody Gakpo and replace him with a dream winger.
The Reds want to compete at the very highest level, both domestically and in Europe.
To do that, they need attackers who can deliver consistently week in, week out - something Cody Gakpo has struggled to provide, particularly when deployed on the left wing.
There’s no denying he has quality. He’s shown flashes of what he can do, popping up with important goals and moments of real promise - especially during the Premier League title winning campaign last season.
But those glimpses have been too sporadic to cement his place as a guaranteed starter in a side that aspires to be among Europe’s elite. At the top level, consistency is everything, and that’s where questions remain.
One of the biggest concerns is his limited impact in one vs one situations.
Modern wingers are expected to beat their man, stretch defences, and create opportunities out of nothing. Too often, Gakpo struggles to assert himself in these moments, failing to impose his presence on the game or truly trouble opposition full-backs.
There’s also an element of predictability to his play.
He frequently looks to cut inside onto his stronger right foot and shoot from the left-wing, but defenders have started to anticipate that move.
As a result, it’s become easier to defend against him, with many attacks breaking down before they can develop into something meaningful.
Liverpool need someone right now who can be unpredictable, who can shift his body and put defenders off balance. A winger who excels in one vs one situations and who opens up space and helps unlock deep-lying defensive blocks.
In all of these areas one of the best wingers in the Premier League on the left-wing over the course of the last few seasons has been Kaoru Mitoma.
The Japanese winger showed against Liverpool before the international break just how unpredictable he can, causing Curtis Jones so many problems and helping Brighton win the game.
Now, he's done the same for Japan against Scotland during the international break and is set to line-up against England on Tuesday.
Mitoma simply thrives in tight spaces and one vs one situations and he's pretty much the dream transfer for Liverpool.
Especially, because of his contract situation. Mitoma will have just one year left on his deal when the summer comes rolling around.
Brighton now this summer is their last chance to sell him for a transfer fee, and this is Liverpool's chance to exploit that situation and get the exciting winger for a bargain price.
Considering Mo Salah is leaving and Liverpool need more unpredictability on the wings, as well as experience, signing a proven Premier League player like Mitoma makes a lot of sense - especially if the other winger Liverpool sign is going to be Yan Diomande.
It would be a dream move, a cut-price for a player of Mitoma's quality, who fixes a lot of the Reds' problems. Who could ask for better?
This has Richard Hughes written all over it.
