FC Bayern are on the brink of a landmark clash. Top of the league against direct rivals Borussia Dortmund – the clash once again has enormous appeal. With a win, the record champions could extend their lead to eleven points and take a huge step towards the championship
For Vincent Kompany, the importance of this match is unmistakable anyway. The Bayern coach made it clear at the matchday press conference just how keen he is for this game. „I said from the start that it is always a title in its own right, a classic,“ emphasised the Belgian. For him, these duels have a dimension all of their own. „The truth is: these games are so important that they represent a small title in their own right.“
Kompany does not want to declare the game as the decisive factor – at least not for his team’s mentality. „The result will not change our mentality. We are on a good path and want to fight to keep it that way.“ The focus is clearly on continuity and the next stage in the title race

Dortmund’s bitter Champions League exit during the week also played a role in the analysis. Kompany is aware of the unpredictability of such situations. „That can do anything to BVB, you don’t know that. It was a setback. But it was the kind of game in which Dortmund could have progressed.“ Mentally, that could work both ways
For Bayern, the decisive factor is what you can influence yourself. „What we have under control is how we come into the game.“ He enjoyed the week of training: „We had healthy poison in training, which I love. We had a very good week.“ Now it’s a matter of bringing that energy onto the pitch
Kompany doesn’t see the atmosphere at Signal Iduna Park, the famous „Yellow Wall“, as a burden, but as an incentive. „In terms of feeling, these are the games you play soccer for. It’s not Dortmund against anyone, it’s Dortmund against Bayern Munich.“ And then the 39-year-old becomes clear: „In my head, it’s all about winning. The opportunity to win there, that’s the coolest thing for me.“
For Kompany, one thing is certain: it’s precisely evenings like this that make the Bundesliga. „It’s important for the league that this is a top match. The teams shouldn’t be afraid.“ Bayern want to beat Dortmund – and at the same time know that their opponents think the same way.
