This week brings derby drama, a comeback against Milan and a famous Turin upset. According to The Laziali, highlights include Guerino Gottardi’s winner at Roma, a 2015 win over Milan and a rare 2-1 success away to Juventus in 1950.
On 21 January 1973, Lazio beat Napoli 3-0 with three after the break. The same date in 1998, Roma 1-2 Lazio in the Coppa Italia quarter-final second leg, settled late by Guerino Gottardi. Also this week, Inter 1-1 Lazio in 1984, Taranto 3-3 Lazio in 1988, and on 24 January 2015, Lazio 3-1 Milan.
Match in Focus, Juventus 1-2 Lazio on 22 January 1950, expected to be one-sided, proved otherwise. Enrico Flamini scored twice, first after Flavio Cecconi disguised a shot to tee him up from a corner, then via Cecconi again from Lucidio Sentimenti IV’s long kick. John Hansen halved the deficit after Giampiero Boniperti and Rinaldo Martino combined.
After the interval Sentimenti IV thwarted Boniperti, Hansen and Martino, Puccinelli went close and Juventus saw a handball appeal waved away before winning a penalty, which Giacomo Mari dragged wide. Lazio resisted to the whistle for a prestigious victory.
Elsewhere, Piero Cucchi died on 19 January 2026 in Tortona. A tireless midfielder in the 1968-69 promotion under Juan Carlos Lorenzo and Bob Lovati, he made 71 Lazio appearances with four goals and later coached widely. Birthdays include Giorgio Chinaglia on 24 January, plus Marco Parolo, Mario Facco, Zeffiro Furiassi, Mauro Tassotti and Gabriele Pin.
