Tigres fans staged an emotional tribute during Saturday’s 5-1 home win over Mazatlan to thank André-Pierre Gignac, 40, amid growing retirement talk.
According to L'Équipe, this was probably his final regular-season home outing, with Mexican reports increasingly pointing to the possibility of retirement. Since 2015 he has scored 222 goals in 439 games, leaving a lasting imprint on the club and the Mexican top flight.
On 10 minutes, a giant tifo reading “Merci Gignac” rose from the stands. Elsewhere, sections displayed his initials APG in Mexico’s colours, while a French flag with the number 10 appeared, and supporters sang a prolonged na na chant to the tune of Hey Jude.
Last month the former France international, capped 36 times with 7 goals between 2009 and 2016, again decided the Monterrey derby. He struck the winner in stoppage time in the 142nd Clásico Regio against Monterrey, which finished 1-0.
Tigres are seventh in the table and look well placed to reach the play-offs.
