Newcastle United picked up a rare 2–1 away win at Tottenham, condemning Thomas Frank to further pressure and extending Spurs’ winless Premier League run to eight matches.
Joe Willock thought he had opened the scoring after 44 minutes, but his effort was retrospectively ruled out for offside. Newcastle did, however, go into the break 1–0 ahead as Malick Thiaw scored deep into first-half stoppage time.
Tottenham equalised on 64 minutes through Archie Gray, but Newcastle quickly restored their advantage when Jacob Ramsey netted the winner, leaving Spurs just five points above the relegation zone.
Frank welcomed Djed Spence back from injury, deploying him at left-back. Eddie Howe, meanwhile, started Anthony Gordon through the middle, leaving both Yoane Wissa and Nick Woltemade on the bench.
Newcastle began brightly, even if their early efforts posed more danger to supporters behind Guglielmo Vicario’s goal than the goalkeeper himself. An Anthony Elanga corner caused early chaos in the area, forcing Radu Drăgușin to divert the ball over his own crossbar.
Moments later, Elanga’s cross was met by a crucial Dominic Solanke flick, altering the ball’s path and taking it away from Sven Botman, who could only balloon his header over.
Nine minutes in, Willock fired just wide from outside the box after a sharp passing move involving Harvey Barnes, Bruno Guimarães and Gordon. Two minutes later, Elanga’s positive start continued as his low cross was met by an inventive Barnes flick, though Vicario saved well down low.
Further Newcastle pressure followed in the 16th minute when Ramsey’s shot was deflected over the bar by Micky van de Ven. Tottenham’s injury problems worsened after the half-hour mark as Wilson Odobert was forced off after landing awkwardly on his left leg.
The visitors thought they had finally made the breakthrough in 44 minutes. Newcastle transitioned from defence to attack in just three passes, with Ramsey slipping Willock in behind. The former Arsenal midfielder cut back onto his right foot and curled past Vicario, only for VAR to rule that a fraction of his forehead was offside.
That lifeline proved brief. Willock soon turned provider, whipping in an inviting cross that Thiaw headed goalwards. Vicario produced an initial save, but Thiaw reacted quickest to stab home the rebound.
Newcastle again started the second half strongly. Ramsey had a half-chance from a Bruno Guimarães cross, while the travelling support appealed twice for penalties as Elanga and Willock went down under separate challenges.
However, Spurs equalised with their first corner of the match. Xavi Simons’ delivery was met by Sarr at the back post, who headed the ball back across the goal for Gray to convert.
Parity lasted just four minutes. Barnes had already been denied by a flying Van de Ven block before Ramsey shovelled home Gordon’s pass to restore Newcastle’s lead.
Tottenham applied pressure in the final 20 minutes in search of another equaliser, but failed to create any clear chances as Newcastle held firm.
Chants of “sacked in the morning” rang out as Spurs supporters filed out early, with their side slipping further towards the drop zone after West Ham’s 1-1 draw over Manchester United. For Eddie Howe, who endured a torrid week leading into the match, this represented a vital victory.
