Arne Slot’s Liverpool have been turning heads with their blistering form this season, but the ongoing speculation around Trent Alexander-Arnold’s future at Anfield hasn’t escaped the headlines. However, far from seeing it as a distraction, Slot believes it serves a purpose in keeping his players grounded and focused on the challenges ahead.
Real Madrid’s interest in Alexander-Arnold became public knowledge earlier this week when the Champions League holders made an initial approach. Liverpool, however, swiftly rebuffed their advances before a formal bid could be tabled.
With Alexander-Arnold’s contract set to expire at the end of the season, there’s a sense of urgency around the right-back’s future. Alongside Liverpool stalwarts Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah, the 26-year-old is free to negotiate pre-contract agreements with foreign clubs as of New Year’s Day. Real Madrid’s intentions are clear, but Liverpool remain resolute in their stance: Alexander-Arnold is not for sale.
Publicly, Slot has guaranteed that the vice-captain will be in the squad for the upcoming clash against Manchester United, but the long-term picture remains uncertain. Despite this, Slot maintains that the saga isn’t disrupting the dressing room but could actually have a positive effect.
Slot, who has already masterminded 23 wins in his 27 games in charge, views the constant chatter about Alexander-Arnold’s future as a potential advantage.
“Maybe it’s even helpful, now you ask me,” Slot admitted. “Because if it is only about how great we are doing then maybe every week I have to have a meeting telling the players it is not perfect yet and we have to do better. And now maybe it is also about different things [in the press] and not everyone is telling them how great they are, so sometimes that can help as well. But for me, it doesn’t distract at all.”

Slot’s words reflect his pragmatic approach to managing a squad that has thrived under his guidance since his arrival in May. His focus on short-term goals has been central to Liverpool’s success, and the Dutchman remains undeterred by transfer gossip.
While fans clamour for clarity over Alexander-Arnold’s future, Slot is quick to underline football’s unpredictable nature.
“I am convinced that he is playing for us on Sunday and I think it is so difficult in football to talk about what happens in a month or in six months,” Slot explained. “You can also ask me the question, ‘Are you convinced that Virgil and Mo are here next season?’ So in football, [it is] such a difficult question to answer because there is hardly any long term in football, especially not for a manager, so your only focus is on the short term.”
Slot’s focus on the present has been key to Liverpool’s resurgence this season, and his message to the supporters is one of trust and unity.
Liverpool fans are well-versed in the highs and lows of player transfers, but Slot has full faith in their ability to rally behind the team regardless of off-field speculation.
“I don’t think I need to tell our fans how to react because they have always been so supportive and have been supporting their team and their players for so, so many years. So I don’t think they need me to tell them how to react and I fully trust them that they will react in the right manner because we’ve been constantly together in the half-year that I have been here. And I think that is something that stands out here, that, for so many years, the team and the fans have been together.”
As the Reds prepare to face Manchester United, all eyes will be on Alexander-Arnold. Whether the right-back stays or departs at the end of the season remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: Slot’s Liverpool are determined to keep their focus on the pitch.
