Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah is confident his teammates will be ready for Tuesday’s Champions League showdown with Paris Saint-Germain, despite the disappointment of a frustrating home defeat to Newcastle United.
The Blues were left to rue missed opportunities at Stamford Bridge on Saturday evening, falling 1-0 to an 18th-minute strike from Anthony Gordon.
Despite dominating possession and forcing Aaron Ramsdale into several saves, Liam Rosenior’s side could not find a way through the Magpies’ resolute low block.
However, for Chalobah, the demands of playing for a club of Chelsea’s stature mean there is no time for a post-match hangover.
“This is Chelsea, and it’s what we are playing for,” Chalobah said when asked about the quick turnaround between high-stakes fixtures.
“We want to be competing in the best competitions, both in Europe and in the Premier League, and we have a big game on Tuesday that I’m sure will be very special.
“It’s going to be a tough challenge, but we are going to give it everything, so we need to move on from this game and focus on some big challenges ahead, starting with PSG.”
Chelsea will have to overturn a three-goal deficit against the reigning European champions following a 5-2 defeat at the Parc des Princes last Wednesday.
They were in the game for large spells before a late collapse saw them concede three times in 20 minutes.
No English side has overturned a three-goal first-leg deficit in a European tie since Liverpool’s famous comeback against Barcelona in the 2019 Champions League semi-finals, highlighting the scale of the task awaiting Chelsea.
