Romeu Tuma Júnior has stepped aside on an indefinite basis as president of Corinthians' Deliberative Council after a court injunction halted a members' assembly on statute reform. According to Globo.com, he submitted his request on Monday.

In his filing, Tuma described board president Osmar Stabile as a traitor and said his own presence was being used to frustrate a planned vote on 18 April.

The case was brought by councillor Felipe Ezabella, who argued it would be irregular to put the reform to a members' vote without prior approval from the Council.

Tuma said the ruling followed agreement from Stabile and the club's legal director, Pedro Soares. He said they made filings after being notified by the court, which had initially rejected the application.

He added that he would not serve a political manoeuvre, and condemned what he called illegal pressure and harassment of staff who work for Corinthians. Tuma said he was stepping aside to remove any pretext and to let the statute reform progress.
