Two Young Players Score: FC Bayern Celebrates Friendly Win Against Jeju SK | OneFootball

FC Bayern is currently on its summer tour of Asia. Today, Tuesday, the record champions played against Jeju SK FC in South Korea. 

This was already their third friendly match this summer, following previous games against Wehen Wiesbaden and Rottach-Egern. The starting lineup for this match against Jeju included established stars such as Jonas Urbig and Min-jae Kim, as well as many young players like Vincent Manuba and Bastian Assomo.

The match was clearly a friendly, giving the record champions’ young talents a chance to showcase their skills.

Chavez and Assomo secure a halftime lead

Bayern took a few minutes to find their rhythm, but then gradually increased the pressure, immediately forcing the South Koreans onto the defensive. The first shots and crosses were still harmless, until Felipe Chavez scored the 1-0 goal after eleven minutes. Jeju couldn’t clear the ball, Bayern immediately switched to counter-pressing, and Chavez curled the ball into the far corner with the inside of his foot.

Just four minutes later, however, Jeju equalized—with their very first chance. Lee Changmin tapped the ball over the line after Matheus Aias powered his way through the penalty area. A minute later, Hiroki Ito, unmarked following a corner kick, shot over the goal. It was clear that Bayern hadn’t found their rhythm yet; there were miscommunications both offensively and defensively. One such miscommunication between Urbig and Ito nearly led to a 1–2 deficit.

Bayern had more possession, but they also made technical errors in their own play, which at times allowed Jeju to create good counterattacking opportunities. In the 35th minute, Chavez delivered a perfect pass to Assomo, who shot the ball just wide of the goal.

In the 40th minute, Bayern had a triple chance; among other things, Chavez failed to convert with a shot that was off target. Just half a minute later, Assomo scored with a magnificent shot from 16 meters, placing it right into the corner to make it 2–1. That was also the score at halftime.

Bayern Wins Friendly Against Jeju

The second half began at a generally slower pace than the first. Bayern controlled the game without creating many clear-cut scoring chances. With 55 minutes on the clock, Urbig was called into action and made a good save. At the other end, Bayern’s attacks were usually disrupted just before they could finish. After an hour, there was a major lineup shake-up. Among others, Nathaniel Brown, Jonathan Tah, Aleksandar Pavlovic, Joshua Kimmich, and Sacha Boey were sent onto the field.

Even with several established players now on the field, there weren’t many scoring chances to be seen. Assomo continued to try hard; the 16-year-old was giving it his all. Arijon Ibrahimovic failed to connect properly with the ball on a shot, and Josip Stanisic, who came on as a substitute later, had a good header opportunity in the 80th minute. Shortly afterward, Maycon Cardozo narrowly missed making it 3–1. Bayern even had another multi-chance sequence, during which Pavlovic, among others, failed to capitalize on an opportunity that presented itself.

The score remained 2–1 for FC Bayern, who will now face Aston Villa on Friday.
