On the eve of World Cup kick-off, the UN urged the United States to carry out a thorough review of how its migration policy is enforced for the tournament, which runs from 11 June to 19 July.
The call comes amid growing controversy over how some teams and supporters are being received. The UN human rights chief, Volker Türk, said at a press conference in Geneva, Switzerland, on Wednesday that he hoped for a deep rethink of how migration controls affect human rights and dignity, particularly in the United States.
He also urged that policies be reconsidered during the tournament period.
Strict enforcement has notably prompted the premature return of Somali referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan, who was questioned for 11 hours on arrival before being denied entry.
The episode is among the grievances directed at the United States and its president, Donald Trump.
