Next Steps

With Casares' removal, Olten Ayres, president of São Paulo's Deliberative Council, will have to set a date for the General Assembly of Members, the final instance of the removal process that involves the club's members.

Casares will remain suspended from his duties until the final result of the General Assembly is announced. If the members endorse that he should leave the position, the leader will be definitively removed. On the other hand, if the members oppose the impeachment, he will return to the presidential seat as usual.

If Julio Casares is definitively removed from the presidency after the General Assembly of Members, he will lose the remainder of his term, which was set to last until the end of 2026. However, he would remain a club member and be eligible to run for any other position in a future election.

However, there is a possibility that the process may not occur. Casares' allies indicate that the ousted president may resign from the position in the coming hours.

Who Takes Over?

The interim presidency of São Paulo is assumed by the vice-president of the current administration, according to the club's Social Statute. In this case, the immediate successor is Vice President Harry Massis Júnior, who has held the position since 2021.

According to São Paulo's Statute, Massis Jr. will remain with the club until the end of the ousted president's term. That is, he will lead the Tricolor until the end of 2026.

Harry Massis Júnior, 80 years old, is a businessman and has been a member of São Paulo since 1964. A lifetime counselor of the club, he has held various roles at Tricolor. Between 2001 and 2002, for example, he served as deputy director of football. He was also deputy administrative director between 1992 and 1993.

First Decisions

Harry Massis Jr. will have important decisions to make in the early days of his interim management. Besides ongoing negotiations, such as the possible transfer of midfielder Alisson to Corinthians, the president will have to decide on the structure of the football department.

Currently, the sector is headed by executive Rui Costa. However, Márcio Carlomagno, the club's general superintendent and Julio Casares' 'right-hand man', has also been frequenting the Barra Funda training center. It remains to be seen what the future holds for the professional.

Massis is considered a "calm and conciliatory" figure. In his first speech as interim president of São Paulo, he promised to work to “protect the institution”.

Casares' Impeachment

In total, 235 councilors attended the meeting that approved Julio Casares' impeachment, whose name was involved in several recent scandals. There were 188 votes in favor of removal and 45 against, along with two blank votes. The atmosphere of the meeting was cordial. Initially, Casares and his lawyers defended themselves before the Council. Subsequently, the signatories of the impeachment request also presented their arguments.

Outside, however, there was significant pressure. São Paulo fans protested with banners and fireworks around Morumbi, demanding Julio Casares' impeachment.

The pressure on Casares increased with the unfolding of recent events. In light of the controversies reported in the press and the cases investigated by the Civil Police, fans made strong demonstrations against the president. Major organized groups of São Paulo, Independente and Dragões da Real, demanded his resignation even before the impeachment vote was scheduled.
