Dayot Upamecano has spoken about his future after FC Bayern’s 6-2 win against SC Freiburg – and in doing so has injected new momentum into the ongoing contract talks.
While the German record champions are working intensively on an extension, two European heavyweights, Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain, are courting the 27-year-old. The situation is coming to a head, and Upamecano himself makes it clear that he is in the middle of a decisive process.
Upamecano was more open than ever in the mixed zone. „We are discussing with Bayern. Let’s see what happens. I can say this a hundred times. We are discussing,“ the centre-back emphasised and then immediately made it clear that the poker had nothing to do with financial demands. „It has nothing to do with money.“
The Frenchman feels comfortable in Munich, is playing a strong season and enjoys the trust of coach Vincent Kompany. He particularly emphasizes the cooperation with the Belgian: „Vincent Kompany is an outstanding coach, I am very happy with him, we talk a lot. I am happy that he has extended his contract until 2029.“ And yet Upamecano leaves open where the journey will take him.

Munich officials have been working hard for weeks to find a solution. Max Eberl and Christoph Freund are leading the talks, but the market makes it complicated. Real Madrid are looking for a long-term successor to David Alaba – and see Upamecano as an ideal candidate. PSG, on the other hand, are tempted by their proximity to home, prestige and a French axis in the squad, which could offer the 27-year-old additional appeal.
Bayern president Herbert Hainer has also recently expressed his confidence: „I’m optimistic. Everything I hear, even when I speak to him myself: he really likes it at Bayern, he feels incredibly comfortable, he also feels incredibly comfortable with the coach.“
But the fact remains: the closer the end of the year approaches, the greater the pressure. From 1 January, Upamecano will be officially allowed to negotiate with other clubs – a situation that FC Bayern wants to avoid at all costs.
Upamecano himself seems calm, but at the same time focused on his sporting duties. „We talk a lot with Max Eberl and Christoph Freund. I’m happy here, I’m playing a good season, doing my job, giving my all for this club,“ he explained. That sounds like commitment, but not like a decision.
The situation remains tricky. Contract until 2026, international competition, enormous importance for the Bayern squad: the outcome of this transfer poker game will point the way for both sides. For the player, who has reached his best phase, and for the club, which does not want to lose a central element of its defence.
