Vasco are debating a heavy fine for Cauan Barros after his dismissal in the 3-3 draw with Cruzeiro at the Mineirão. Bolavip Brasil reports that directors consider Sunday’s infraction irresponsible and are weighing financial punishment.
The midfielder scored twice on the night but was sent off soon afterwards. With one fewer player, the Gigante da Colina laboured defensively and missed a chance to close out victory.
Club figures also recalled a similar episode in the clássico against Flamengo, when Barros was dismissed early. Supporters believe the win would have been secure without the red card, but the match finished level.
Head coach Renato Gaúcho played down the controversy in public and said any sanction rests with the club hierarchy. He stressed Barros had helped with two goals and argued mistakes are normal for a youngster.
Renato accepted the referee’s decision was correct, citing excessive force in the challenge that brought a straight red. He said Barros sought to stop play rather than injure, but his foot went in too hard.
Despite the setback, he praised his team’s spirit under Cruzeiro pressure. He reflected that Vasco conceded, created chances, improved after the interval to turn the game, went ahead again, then conceded in stoppage time.
