Former Serie A referee Gianpaolo Calvarese backed Daniele Doveri’s decision to caution Yann Bisseck instead of sending him off during Inter Milan’s 2-1 win over Hellas Verona at the Stadio Bentegodi.
The incident saw the German defender foul Giovane as the last man.
Therefore, it sparked brief debate over whether a red card for denial of a goalscoring opportunity (DOGSO) should have been issued.
Speaking to Italian media after the match, via FCInter1908, Calvarese explained that Doveri’s decision was correct according to the Laws of the Game.
Therefore, it fully justified by the movement of the ball and positioning of nearby defenders.
“Was there a red card missing for DOGSO after Bisseck’s foul on Giovane? From the first still frame, it might seem so,” he admitted.
“But when you look at the second frame, it’s clear that the ball is going toward the sideline and toward Sucic.”

The former official pointed out that direction of play and proximity of covering defenders are key elements in DOGSO assessments, both of which were missing in this case.
“The yellow card from Doveri is sustainable,” Calvarese continued.
“The ball didn’t move toward goal, and Sucic was close enough to recover. Therefore, by regulation, there was no grounds for a red.”
His remarks echoed the view shared by other refereeing analysts, including Luca Marelli.
In real time, the sequence showed that Giovane’s touch carried the ball away from goal.
Inter still had defensive cover.
Therefore, making Doveri’s decision to show only a yellow both reasonable and consistent.
