Victor Osimhen was moved to tears after Galatasaray fans honoured his late mother with a vast tifo before the Champions League round of 16 first leg against Liverpool at Rams Park on Tuesday night.

Moments before kick-off, supporters unfurled a portrait of the Nigerian striker alongside his mother, carrying the message "We are family and family is everything." As the anthem played, Osimhen stood between Mario Lemina and Gabriel Sara, visibly emotional. Lucas Torreira consoled him before he composed himself to greet the Liverpool players.

The forward then delivered on the pitch, setting up Lemina to score the winner in a vital 1-0 victory for the Istanbul side.

"My mother passed away at a very young age. My older brother called from the village, he said that my mother had slept and never woke up. When she left, it was really tough for the family. My dad has to go out and look for a job, to make sure that we are fed every day. Football was the only escape route for me and my family to get out of poverty," he told UEFA.

It was a striking show of solidarity for Galatasaray’s talisman, whose bond with the club has grown since his arrival in Istanbul.
