Chelsea had made such a bright start to this game, and now they’re 2-0 down. Welcome back to the Champions League, Blues.

It was an energetic start from Enzo Maresca’s team, who found their feet right away and played really impressive, aggressive football in a hostile environment.

Chelsea end up punished for Bayern error

The first came after Bayern won a drop ball and sent it out wide, where Michael Olise was able to play a dangerous cross across goal which was deflected in by Trevoh Chalobah.

Now we don’t want to moan too much – in the end this came down to the Chelsea players switching off at the wrong moment.

But still, it feels unfair to us that Bayern basically benefitted from taking a bad free kick, which hit the ref and became a drop ball. They were the ones who hit the referee on the first attempt, if a drop ball is given after that, it’s only fair that Chelsea have a chance to get a player out to contest it.

Still, at this level you know that calls aren’t always going to go your way, and you can’t rely on the referee getting everything right.

Chelsea sucker punched by decisive Bayern

Harry Kane knocks in his penalty against Chelsea.

Chelsea were still reeling from that decision when Bayern struck again. Harry Kane is as good at winning penalties as he is as taking them, and he got a cheap one from Moises Caicedo and buried it.

The Blues need to regroup before this gets ugly. These are the levels, and you can be outplay your opposition in this competition. Just ask Bayern, who know that situation well from 2012.
