Villarreal have agreed to loan Argentine winger Thiago Fernández to Real Oviedo until the end of the season, with no option to buy. The move will be formalised after he completes a medical in Asturias.
According to El Periódico Mediterráneo, the player travelled on Thursday. The club’s winter clear-out also sent Ilias Akhomach to Rayo Vallecano on loan until 30 June, likewise without a purchase clause.
Fernández was Villarreal’s first and only winter signing, a right-footed winger who plays off the left. His contract runs to 31 December 2025, and last summer a free transfer from Vélez Sarsfield was agreed, following their 2024 league title.
He tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee on 1 December 2024, sidelined for eight months. That setback stalled a European move despite strong interest.
Fit again from early August 2025, and with five months left on his deal, he informed Vélez he would not renew and intended to join Villarreal. The club then removed him from the first-team group with a separate training plan.
After 13 months without an official game, Marcelino García Toral has chosen a loan to build minutes and confidence. In 2024 he produced 6 goals and 9 assists across 42 matches, including 6 assists and 5 goals in 25 league games.
