Vinicius Lira has suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury and will not play again for Santos this season. The damage was confirmed by imaging and an MRI on Monday, a day after the 1-1 draw with Corinthians at Vila Belmiro in the sixth round of the Brasileirão.
According to Diario Do Peixe, the left-back sprained his left knee during that match. He came on at 27 minutes of the second half, then departed in tears on a stretcher at 48, leaving Santos with two fewer players after Luan Peres had been sent off.
He had been called up by Brazil Under-20s on Friday 13 for two friendlies against Paraguay. Owing to the injury, he will be withdrawn by the CBF.
This season, Lira was promoted permanently to the first team after the Copinha and had been starting. He has made 11 appearances to date and previously debuted in 2025, also in the state competition. In the Paulistão, he featured in three matches.
Registered for the Brasileiro, he was an unused substitute in the defeat to Bahia in Salvador, and in the last three rounds against Sport, Juventude and Cruzeiro.
Lira is under contract until March 2028. He began at Palmeiras and joined Santos in 2017, and has a deal with Adidas. His youth honours include the 2018 Dani Cup U-12 title, 2022 Copa Votorantim U-15 runners-up, 2022 Paulista Cup U-16 title, 2023 Copa Brasileirinho U-16 title and the 2025 Paulista U-20 crown.
