Watford are reportedly looking into a shock deal for former PSG defender Layvin Kurzawa

Watford are interested in striking a deal for former PSG defender Layvin Kurzawa, who remains a free agent following his exit from the reigning Ligue 1 champions last summer.

That's according to a recent report from Foot Mercato, where the Hornets' interest has been revealed in a shock development heading into the closing days of the January transfer window.

Tom Cleverley is seemingly keen on bringing further additions to Vicarage Road after signing Udinese's James Abankwah on loan earlier this month.

Watford are reportedly attempting to pip Championship rivals Hull City to a deal for Southampton left-back Charlie Taylor, but their fresh interest in Kurzawa could prevent a move for the veteran.

Watford FC's Layvin Kurzawa transfer interest

The Hornets are among a number of sides eager to seal Kurzawa's services on a free transfer. They reportedly face competition from European clubs, one of which being La Liga outfit Leganes.

As reported by RMC Sport journalist Fabrice Hawkins, Leganes have submitted a contract offer for the 32-year-old. It's said the deal is not yet completed and discussions are set to continue, with Kurzawa still waiting for a new club after his exit from PSG last summer.

The 32-year-old has enjoyed a glittering career in French football, having lifted the Ligue 1 title on five occasions during his time with PSG.

He racked up more than 150 appearances for the Parisians between 2015 and 2024, but played just once in his last two years amid a forgettable season-long loan switch to Fulham in the 2022/23 term.

Layvin Kurzawa would be an interesting signing for Watford FC

It would certainly be intriguing to see a player of the Frenchman's undoubted pedigree and top-level experience in the Championship.

There is evidence to suggest he could be a real coup at this level, but Watford are also familiar with signing high-profile free agents with mixed success, with Moussa Sissoko enduring a difficult season following his return to the club.

Kurzawa would not come cheap either in terms of wages, one would imagine. Meanwhile, he has played very little football across the last couple of years, meaning Cleverley's side should be carefully running the rule over any potential deal.

Watford do, however, need to bolster their defence, as they are currently conceding 1.4 goals per match. The Hornets are scoring the same number of goals a game on average, but that's the sixth-best tally in the league, whereas their defensive record is among the worst.

Watford are next in action at home to Norwich City on Saturday afternoon, where they will be hoping to arrest a tricky run of form which has seen them win just one of their last seven Championship matches to slip to ninth in the league table.
