West Brom are closing in on appointing Tony Mowbray’s successor as Ryan Mason looks set to take over at The Hawthorns.
Albion left club legend James Morrison in charge for their final two games of the season against Cardiff City and Luton Town after parting ways with the 61-year-old towards the end of April, and it now appears a replacement has been sourced in the Tottenham Hotspur coach.
The Telegraph’s Mike McGrath confirmed Mason was in the process of finalising talks with Albion to become the new head coach, with the 33-year-old expected to take on his first full-time management role of his career.
It is a gamble for Shilen Patel and Co to take as they chase a return to the Premier League, and it will be intriguing to see how the playing squad adapts to a radical change of coaching profile.
With Mason all but set to take the job, FLW’s West Brom fan pundit has outlined what he thinks Albion will do during the summer transfer window with the former Hull City midfielder at the helm.
Speaking to Football League World, West Brom fan pundit Callum Burgess believes Ryan Mason will use his connections at Tottenham Hotspur to recruit some of their youthful talents on loan, hoping they can make their marks at The Hawthorns to bring about a promotion push.
Burgess said: “If Ryan Mason does become Albion manager that the rumours are pointing towards that becoming the case, then we will definitely expect to sign someone on loan from Tottenham, whether it be Will Lankshear for another season or Jamie Donley, who had a really good season at Leyton Orient.
“With Mason’s connections with the club and previously working with the academy, I envisage him using those links to try and get Tottenham’s better young players, and it’s definitely something Albion need to take advantage of as, in the last few years, we haven’t been great with our loans.
“We saw Callum Marshall from West Ham that he was too raw, and the loan was too early for him, and other than Mikey Johnston, there hasn’t been too many big examples of the loan market being used to Albion’s advantage, so the club have to be better in that aspect.”
All but set to recruit Ryan Mason, West Brom will be looking to sign some young and hungry Tottenham players who are bound to be stars of the future.
Many players who have gone on to thrive in the top-flight announced themselves on the Championship stage, and the Baggies will be hopeful that one of these additions can help transform their fortunes to become a Premier League outfit once again.
Will Lankshear didn’t get anywhere near the game time he wanted in the blue and white stripes last season, and it’s difficult to see him leaping the pecking order ahead of the likes of Josh Maja and Daryl Dike.
Jamie Donley could be an interesting addition after operating the majority of the campaign at Leyton Orient from a central attacking position. Albion are in desperate need of a creative playmaker to compete with Tammer Bany after the departures of John Swift and Grady Diangana, so the 20-year-old could be an appealing fit to help supply regular chances to the forward line.
Meanwhile, another youngster in Damola Ajayi could be worth taking a punt on, with the 19-year-old presenting his attacking prowess off the bench to score in a Europa League victory over Elfsborg as Spurs went on to lift the crown.
It could be exciting times ahead under Mason, and West Brom will need to be shrewd in the upcoming summer market to give him the best possible chance of success in his opening term.
