West Bromwich Albion had a mixed weekend, with one very important transfer update and a disappointing friendly result.

With three new players having already been brought in, this is turning into a busy summer for West Bromwich Albion, who are looking to improve significantly under new head coach Ryan Mason, after finishing a disappointing ninth in the Championship at the end of the 2024-25 season.

Aune Heggebo, Nat Philips and George Campbell have already arrived at The Hawthorns this summer, but a pre-season friendly at the weekend seemed to confirm that there is still work to be done on the West Brom team ahead of the big Championship kick-off in less than two weeks.

Here are the latest stories to have emerged from The Hawthorns...

Albion may be set to miss out on Mikey Moore to Rangers

The news that mercurial young winger Mikey Moore has been omitted from the Spurs squad to travel to the Far East has caused a frenzy of speculation over the player's availability.

There has been a lot of interest in Moore from across the Championship, but the Telegraph's Matt Law has warned that another potential suitor has entered the race who could blow the others out of the water. Law reported on X that Rangers have entered the conversation and are now considered to be the favourites to land Moore on loan next season.

Moore's connections to Ryan Mason, who joined West Brom from the Spurs coaching staff, had fuelled hopes that the young player could be tempted to join him, but it now seems that the Scottish giants could be set to land him instead.

Albion well beaten in Lincoln friendly

Mason took his new-look West Brom team to Sincil Bank on Saturday to play Lincoln City in a pre-season friendly, and the result was less than satisfying for Baggies fans. Lincoln won the match 4-2, and while it doesn't pay to get too invested in the results of friendly matches, there were causes for concern for Albion fans.

Lincoln raced into a two-goal lead in the opening three minutes, scoring their first after just 45 seconds. Two of Albion's three new signings this summer so far have been defenders, so there is some remodelling going on defensively at The Hawthorns at the moment, and conceding four goals to League One opposition indicates that the defence needs further work. Mason is clearly aware of this, having said after the match that there is still "a lot of work to do" on his team.

Devante Cole puts himself in the shop window

One of the brighter spots from the Lincoln defeat was the performance of a player who has had a difficult time of things since joining West Bromwich Albion last summer.

Devante Cole failed to score for West Brom last season in 16 appearances for the club from the bench throughout 2024-25, but he chipped in with a goal at Sincil Bank in their 4-2 defeat on Saturday. It was a good time for Cole to find the back of the net, with Talksport's Darren Witcoop having reported on X a few days earlier that the player will likely be leaving the club this summer.

Cole only has a year left to run on his West Brom contract, so selling the player would suit them better than a loan, and although Cole's had a disappointing time of things since joining the club from Barnsley, it's likely that there will still be suitors as a result of the form he showed at Oakwell prior to making his switch to The Hawthorns, and Saturday was a very useful way of reminding other clubs that he does know the way to goal.

Fellows uncertainty continues, with Albion making "last-ditch bid" to keep him

It remains the case that there is considerable uncertainty surrounding the future of another of West Brom's younger talents, with Premier League clubs continuing to circle around the England under-21 star, whose 14 assists last season were the joint-most of any player in the Championship.

Everton's interest in the player is long-standing. They were reported to have made a bid for him at the end of the January transfer window and their interest has not gone away, with reported interest in him from Leeds, as well. But with Fellows having signed a contract extension with the club at the start of 2024, Albion are under no obligation to sell the player, and Fellows played the first 68 minutes of their match at Lincoln on Saturday.

It's been reported that Albion were making a "last-ditch bid" to prevent the player from leaving the club, and at present there is little to indicate that he will be going anywhere, although this can't be considered definite, with more than a month of the transfer window still to run.
