West Brom are edging closer to appointing James Morrison as permanent head coach after a surge that secured Championship survival. According to ExpressAndStar.com, the club are moving towards naming the former midfielder.
Morrison took interim charge for the second time this season, and the third of his Albion career, after Eric Ramsay’s nine-game spell. A defeat in his first match prompted him to call out some Albion players.
That moment preceded a 10-game unbeaten run which proved enough to preserve their status. A win over Watford made them safe, then an EFL points deduction meant they still needed a point against Ipswich, which they secured with one match left.
Support has swelled for Morrison to get the job full-time. Former team-mates Shane Long and Gareth Barry have publicly backed him, while a poll this week showed 96 per cent of Baggies fans in favour.
With one game left as Albion visit Sheffield Wednesday, it appears the club are moving towards naming him as Ramsay’s permanent successor. It is unclear if anything will be finalised before the weekend, but it is highly likely he becomes the permanent figure at The Hawthorns.
Morrison has not closed the door on taking the role. He has said he is focused on finishing the season, expects plenty of conversation, and that talks with the club will follow after the campaign.
