West Ham United claimed a hard-fought 2-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur, with the Hammers bagging a very late goal via Callum Wilson to seal the tie.
Nuno Espirito Santo’s side had their backs against the wall for most of the game but showed the required doggedness to get the result.
With only 39% possession, West Ham found themselves constantly under pressure and the defence needed to hold firm.
Konstantinos Mavropanos and Jean-Clair Todibo did so with aplomb. The latter in particular had an outstanding game.
Todibo has struggled in East London but started finding his groove in recent weeks before delivering this colossal performance in the rearguard.
The Frenchman won 7/9 duels, made 10 defensive contributions, one interception, and won 3/5 tackles.
He also recorded three clearances, blocked a shot, and made nine recoveries.
Todibo was also efficient on the ball, completing 41 of 45 passes and losing possession only six times.
When he first signed, he looked like quite the prospect on paper, but his performances were concerning.
However, since finding his feet this season, Todibo has not looked back.
This performance is the blueprint West Ham must now commit to for the remainder of the season.
The Hammers are in a relegation scrap because of their porous defence. Too often, they have folded under pressure and lacked organisation.
However, against Tottenham, there was a collective resolve and discipline that had been missing for long spells.
If West Ham can reproduce this level of concentration, physicality, and structure every week, they will give themselves a fighting chance.
You do not need dominance or pretty football to survive. You need resilience.
Performances like this, built on commitment and defensive accountability, are non-negotiable going forward.
Deliver this standard weekly, and West Ham should have enough to grind out results, pick up points, and drag themselves clear of the danger zone before it is too late.
