West Ham United have ‘definite interest’ in Feyenoord midfielder Quinten Timber this summer, according to ExWHUEmployee.
Timber is one of the options to bolster the engine room at the London Stadium.
The Hammers have failed with a bid for Mateus Fernandes and could turn to other options if a deal proves too difficult.
Timber is not atop the West Ham transfer wishlist, but his name is there if other options fail, even though he recently returned from a lengthy spell on the sidelines.
West Ham lacked quality in the engine room last season, and upgrading the middle of the park is a priority for the club hierarchy.
There have been links to exciting names like Fernandes, Harvey Elliott, Bilal El Khannouss, and Georgiy Sudakov, but nothing has materialised.
With the Premier League inching closer, West Ham desperately need midfield reinforcement and could turn to Timber.
Before his injury setback in February, Timber was in terrific form for Feyenoord, bagging six goals and creating four big chances in 18 Eredivisie appearances.
Lauded by former Feyenoord and current Liverpool boss Arne Slot as a ‘special player’, Timber is a terrific central midfielder. At 24, his prime years are still ahead of him.
However, West Ham would be taking a significant gamble by pursuing him.
The Hammers cannot ignore Timber’s recent injury history. Before the February lay-off that kept him out for months, he had already missed all of January.
That’s two significant spells on the sidelines in quick succession, plus other setbacks, raising serious concerns about his durability in the physically demanding Premier League.
West Ham cannot afford to invest in a key midfield signing who may struggle to stay fit across an entire campaign.
With so much riding on improving their engine room, West Ham should target a more reliable option.
